By Adam Baskin: Ryan Garcia announced on Saturday that he’ll take a tune-up fight in January like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to get ready for their mega-fight on April 15th.
With the huge money at stake for his April fight, Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) won’t likely take on a high-caliber opponent that could potentially sink his clash with Tank Davis.
As many boxing fans know, Ryan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions have taken it VERY easy with him, matching him with mostly moderate-level opposition his entire six-year professional career.
It’s fair to say that Golden Boy has similarly matched Ryan as Jaime Munguia, keeping him well-protected from the lions in the 135-lb division.
Perhaps the best name on Ryan’s resume was 35-year-old Luke Campbell, who had already been softened up by Vasily Lomachenko by the time Kingry faced him.
It would be nice if Ryan were to take on a good opponent for his tune-up bout in January because Tank has chosen an excellent tune-up opponent in Hector Luis Garcia.
If Ryan chooses a lesser opponent for his warm-up fight, he will look like the well-protected social media fighter many boxing fans view him as.
Tanks very emotional huh 🤔

Good options for Ryan’s tune-up fight:
- Michel Rivera
- Frank Martin
- George Kambosos Jr
- Steve Spark
- Arnold Barboza
- Richardson Hitchins
- Isaac Cru
- Gary Antuanne Russell
- Shakur Stevenson
- William Zepeda
- Edwin De Los Santos
- Jose Ramirez
Ryan Garcia: “I’ll be back in January as well. Stay tuned.”
Ray Jackson: “Fight George Kambosos as your tune-up.”
Tank Davis: “He will sleep him. Lol!”
Ryan Garcia: “You’re right. I would sleep him.”
Tank Davis: “Shut up, b**ch!”
Ryan Garcia – “I’m going to beat him fairly easy”
“He has to be a good boxer at this point to get to where he’s at,” said Ryan Garcia to Stephen A’s First Take, talking about Gervonta Davis. “He has to know somewhat what he’s doing in there. He can’t just be a slugger.
“Although I will say every time he’s tried to box, the rounds weren’t swaying his way,” continued Ryan about his assessment of Gervonta’s skills.
“Yeah, he boxed Rolly Romero and caught him with a shot, but in my opinion, he [Tank] wasn’t winning that fight, nor was he winning a couple of his fights where he did end up getting a knockout, which is great for him.
“I just think he’s met the wrong person, and I’m just a whole different fighter than any of the guys he’s ever fought. This is what makes the fight exciting. Two great fighters in the ring, and you never know what’s going to happen.
“In my heart, I’m going to beat him, and I’m going to beat him fairly easy,” said Ryan about Tank.
