Rangers: Cho could be Colak alternative

Ross Wilson struck gold in the transfer market for Glasgow Rangers last summer as the Ibrox sporting director swooped to sign Antonio Colak from Greek giants PAOK.

The centre-forward has been a phenomenal addition to the ranks and has racked up 11 goals in 15 Premiership outings to date, whilst he also plundered three goals in four qualifying matches to help the club reach the group stage of the Champions League.

However, the Croatia international has been dealing with injury issues of late and has only played once in the Scottish top flight since 9th November.

Alfredo Morelos, who has scored seven goals in 19 league matches for the Gers this season, has deputised for the former PAOK marksman. However, the Colombian is out of contract at the end of the campaign, and Michael Beale and Wilson need to think about what life will look like at Ibrox after the 26-year-old’s departure.

Rangers would need to bring in a replacement for Morelos in order to have an alternative option to Colak at the top end of the pitch, and South Korean centre-forward Gue-Sung Cho could be the ideal man to take up that position.

The Light Blues are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the striker and have been battling it out with their bitter Glasgow rivals Celtic to land his signature.

Journalist Alan Nixon recently claimed (via Twitter) that Cho’s club Jeonbuk Hyundai want to cash in on the forward and that interested parties, which may include Rangers, are waiting for the asking price – which the reporter has not disclosed – to drop before swooping.

Beale must now pursue a deal for the 20-cap international, whether it happens before this month’s transfer window ends or in the summer, as the dynamo could be an ideal alternative to Colak as a replacement for Morelos at Ibrox.

Cho, who scored two goals in four appearances at the 2022 World Cup, is a proven goalscorer at club and international level and could be an excellent addition to the Light Blues squad.

The 25-year-old was in stunning form in 2022 as he delivered consistently brilliant performances in the K-League. In 26 starts for Jeonbuk, the South Korean gem scored a whopping 17 goals and created five goals for his team-mates, whilst averaging a Sofascore rating of 7.33.

His average rating in that division would place him third in the current Rangers squad and one place above Colak, who has averaged a 7.30 Sofascore rating. That duly suggests that the Korean forward could be a fine prospective signing for the Light Blues if he can adapt to life in Scotland.

Would Cho be a good signing?

Cho, who was hailed as an “internet sensation” by The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor, also has plenty of time left on his side to develop and improve at the age of 25, and he could be a signing for the here-and-now as well as the long-term.

Therefore, the South Korea international could be an ideal signing for Rangers as an alternative centre-forward option to Colak, as he has the potential to make a big impact in the final third and could push the Croatian finisher hard for a place in Beales’s starting XI.
